Breast Surgery - Breast Augmentation - Cosmetic Surgery
- Implants - Breast Enlargement
Doctors worldwide, enjoy and deserve a position of ultimate respect and trust. After all,
most of us at one time or another may need to place our very lives or the lives of our
most loved ones in the hands of a physician who we may have never met. Doctors are some of
our most highly trained, skilled professionals so it seems reasonably to believe that if
doctors are routinely performing any procedure, it must be ok. However, applying this
train of thought to elective cosmetic surgery procedures leads us to an interesting
juncture. Remember Thalidomide? What about Phen fen? What about the abuse of valium? Are
doctors in cahoots with drug companies? Do you trust drug companies? Are doctors
themselves victims of misinformation from major drug manufacturers? There are many
unanswered questions?
Some experts and an army of lawyers believe that several major manufacturers have withheld
information about the risks of breast implants from the general public for years. They
believe this but have not been able to prove it scientifically. Because they have not yet
been able to prove it, does not mean it is not true; it simply remains unproven to the
satisfaction of the scientific and medical community. After all, doctors have been
implanting artificial devices into the human body for years-artificial hearts, valves,
knees, joints, bones, skin and assorted other parts, much to the relief of most of the
recipients.
It is true and scientifically established that the body's immune system does not like
artificial substances inside the body and will attack same with a vengeance. Immune
suppression drugs provided a major thrust to the advancement of artificial body parts.
Still, doctors will almost universally prefer organic replacement parts over synthetic if
the former is available or possible. Therefore, it is not illogical to presume that
silicone let lose in the body might cause problems, not to mention all the other synthetic
ingredients and chemicals which make up the casing of the breast implant. So, even if you
use a saline or other organic composition implant filler, the outer casing is still
artificial and potentially a suspect. But does it matter? Artificial knee and joint
replacement is common among the elderly and quite successful in returning ambulatory
movements to the formerly crippled. These parts are also artificial and no one is
screaming about the dangers of artificial knees.
The silicone connection to autoimmune diseases was never really established and still has
not been to this day. It really depends on who you ask? It is even less clear what
negative health effects, if any, are the result of breast implants filled with organic
substances. It takes a long time to establish a firm scientific link between a thing and a
disease. Even the most vocal of critics will admit that there are few long term studies on
breast implants, although many are underway now. The link between cancer and cigarette
smoking took decades to establish; so, it may be years before the verdict is in on breast
implants. Others will say this a poor comparison because the cancer-smoking link was also
hidden from the public by greedy corporations. This may or may not be true, but another
reason is scientific, not commercial. Long term, double blind studies are expensive and
difficult to conduct with human subjects. Conversely, results from animal studies are much
easier to obtain but often difficult to apply to human situations.
Another factor to consider is the "option" question. Let's say you are going to
die because of a bad heart and you have a choice of:
A) You have a bad heart and you are going to die very soon!
B) You can implant an artificial heart and either the heart may fail or the procedure may
kill you but you have a 25% chance of living another 20 years!
WHICH WOULD YOU CHOOSE?
Artificial hearts do not fall into the "elective" surgery category in the sense
that you can elect not to have the surgery and still be just fine. Artificial breasts do
fall into the elective category. So now let's say you are very depressed about the size of
your breasts. They make you unhappy. They make your lover or husband unhappy. You feel
inferior or somehow incomplete because of the size of your breasts. Why you might feel
that way is another issue but still your options or choices are:
A) Leave your breasts alone and accept them for what they are. This choice breaks into two
sub-options.
1) You do nothing but either continue to be unhappy or try to put it
out of your mind-something similar to how you might hate your toes too but you just live
with it and hide them from people as much as you can.
2) You study and rethink the entire issue of your body image and learn
to accept that beauty is not just about appearances-that true beauty emanates from
within.*
B) Find a safer, natural way to enlarge your breasts without surgery or dangerous
potential complications or long term health risks.
C) Have your breasts artificially inflated through a process known as breast
augmentation-a process that involves the surgical insertion of what are basically plastic
bags inside of your chest.
WHICH WOULD YOU CHOOSE?
Surprisingly, over a million women each year choose Option C and the age
that women are choosing this option keeps moving downward. Our final suggestion would be
this. Choose wisely, because through the miracle of modern science, your original breasts
may not be the only pair of breasts you will ever have; however, you are only going to get
one body and one life. For many women, having larger breasts is actually important enough
to take some risks. In all fairness to all the women who decide that this minimal risk is
worthwile and in response to others who would consider this to be a stupid choice, it is
wise to remember that just about everything in life involves some degree of risk. This
would include such common everyday things as taking prescription medicines, walking on icy
sidewalks, jogging in the park and perhaps most risky of all, driving to work.
*Prologue-An important issue that should not be lost in the breast augmentation
controversy is the connection between breast size and the perception of what is beautiful
and/or sexy. (See breast history page) Accepting and being happy
with our body images is much easier said than done. Furthermore, concern with one's
personal, physical appearance is not an issue that affects only women. We blame society
for our confusion and obsessions and perhaps rightly so; but to some extent, we are also
blaming ourselves. How we feel about how we look is a complex social and psychological
process. Most professional models, those who we pay so highly for their physical
perfection, will admit that they have one or more things that they hate about their
bodies. Men are not immune from similar feelings either. Most men, if asked, would admit
at least privately, that there is something that they don't like about their bodies; that
they would like more hair, bigger muscles, to be taller and so on and the big one at the
top of the list, a larger and/or longer penis. We would guess that there are quite
possibly more men who are dissatisfied with the size of their penis than there are women
who are dissatisfied with the size of their breasts. We would also guess that the
inventors of a "successful" penis enlargement technique will become billionaires
almost immediately and that penis enlargement would become the most common and popular
plastic surgery procedure in all the world.
Finally, all this begs the question, "what is wrong with us as human beings?"
Why can't we be happy with what we have? Would similar beings from outer space find this
human obsession with personal appearance to be strange and illogical? Maybe or maybe not
and just maybe, all of these behavioral inconsistencies are just a small part of what
makes us so lovingly imperfect and perfectly human.
